Winner: Fanfare UV by Kevin Bainbridge

This app is for HVAC engineers to size ventilation ductwork. There are a lot of calculations that need to be done for proper ductwork: this app makes it easy to input the data. It even checks your plan and lets you know of any errors.

Judge's Comments: Very professionally done. A clean, easy to use UI with nice layout and logical flow. Well done!

Acceptance Speech: As is the custom, I would like to thank George and the team at NSB/AppStudio for producing such a good product and at just the right time to ride the PWA 'wave'.

Having used NSBasic in the days of the Palm Pilot, and then used Java/Objective C/C# for app store development, a decision was made to concentrate on a single codebase to cover all types of device. Converting apps to NSB/Appstudio PWAs was quite straightforward and not unpleasurable - I had not appreciated how far Javascript had progressed in the last few years. PWAs are evolving fast but I am confident the team at NSB/AppStudio will keep up with developments.

my500e is an app which helps you control the functions of your Fiat 500e remotely. It comes with a hardware module which plugs into the OBD port of car. It controls charging, door locks, heating and airconditioning. Never get into a cold car again!

Judge's Comments: Clean, simple design for this app. The designer has also left space for adding more features. I wish I had this for my car!

Lulucam by Peter Finlay

My wife has a Boarding Cattery (https://LulusCattery.com) where cats stay while their owners are on holiday or otherwise not at home. We have installed simple CCTV cameras in each pen and this software allows the owners to log in and view their cats from any location. General purpose software is available to access these cameras of course, but we wanted something more bespoke and plonker-proof to use by non-tech clients.

Judge's Comments: Why would anyone leave their pets someplace which did not have software like this? Very useful for piece of mind!

BettorGolf by Kevin Eckstrand

BettorGolf not only keeps your score for your play, it keep track of all the side bets you make with the other players. It has many of the world's best courses built in, and you can add your own. It can even announce scores in a spoken voice.

Judge's Comments: I can see how this could increase the excitement of a golf outing - complex side bets are easy to track. The UI holds this app back a bit - a cleaner, slicker interface would make the app more fun to use.

Journal by Guy Gendreau

This application makes it possible, among other things, to make data secret. For example a personal agenda, passwords, secret codes, etc. It also allows to see if a word or several are present on the whole of a text or to see if several words are contained on only one same line. This possibility is very useful for finding an event on a personal journal or other. In order to increase security, another application can be launched initially to make the main application invisible.

Judge's Comments: The app makes use of the very strong Stanford Crypto Library to encrypt information on your device. To move to the next level, the UI design will need to be improved.

Winner: Arena Assistant by Drew Moffat

Arena Assistant is an interactive app designed to enhance user experience and increase profits for vendors at venues, stadiums, and arenas. Originally, the app was designed specifically for the CHI Health Center and TD Ameritrade Stadium. However, the Ticketmaster API and Google Map API allowed our app to be used nationwide at any event center. Our value adds bring to life practical functions that could easily help vendors increase profits and allow event centers to increase advertising revenue.

Judge's Comments: Good use of APIs found on the net. Pulls information from a variety of sources to make a prototype app which could be made real. Need to take different screen sizes into account. Good documentation included.

Acceptance Speech: I would like to thank NSB for the opportunity to have our application seen by many others through this competition. I have spent numerous hours creating this application and debugging it while also working part time and going to school full time, so this award makes all that effort worth it. It fills me with excitement that other people found the application to be useful as well. This was my first time working with JavaScript and AppStudio and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and look forward to continuing my education and development with the tools. Again, thank you so much for the opportunity and I am so glad you enjoyed our application!"

Jay Parking by Greta Portis

I created this app for my University parking as a class project. This app is just a prototype, so I will include some important information below to go through the app. All of the data in the app goes through a database and is not hard coded.

Judge's Comments: This app uses a number of features: Geolocation, Google Maps, jqWidgets Chart, PayPal and databases. While it's not complete, as a student project to learn how to tie a bunch of technologies together, it's a success.

Ranger by Amy Nelson

We have created an app, Ranger, for use with mobile phones that will help all National Park lovers explore the parks and connect with other fans of "America's Best Idea". We created this app for a class at Creighton University and had a great time learning the ins and outs of App Studio while working together for a cause we were all passionate about.

Judge's Comments: Too bad the back end database this app uses is no longer available. We would have liked to see more of this one!
