4. NS BASIC Tech Note Nov 30, 1994 NS BASIC and Graffiti -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A number of users have contacted us about a problem using Graffiti while in the NS BASIC program editor. To work around a "feature" in the Newton, Graffiti outputs CR & space when the CR character is entered. This keeps the cursor from disappearing from the screen in most applications. However, it also keeps NS BASIC from seeing when you've entered a CR. We've contacted Graffiti about this. They admit it's a kludge, but the only way they could find to deal with the problem. They are currently assessing the situation to see if there is another way to get around it. It is expected that other packages will also have problems with their method. Graffiti works properly with NS BASIC for all other functions, other than program editing. If you'd like to send further feedback on this to Graffiti, you can email them at joe© palm.com. If you have further questions, please contact us at NS BASIC at info© nsbasic.com. Here's a great workaround from an NS BASIC user: "Despite this problem while playing and editing a basic program I still prefer to use Graffiti instead of the keyboard. What I do is put the Graffiti "square" over the keyboard leaving the return key of the keyboard exposed; I then use Graffiti as I would normally use only pressing the return key instead of making the return gesture on the Graffiti square." -- David Whiteman, dbw© primenet.com
